Stop wasting time on your coding Portfolio - DO THIS INSTEAD

January 08, 2025•2 min read

Why would I tell you to 🛑 STOP working on your coding portfolio?

Because all the students over the years I've helped successfully get their first dev job offer…

… making anywhere from 70k to well over 100k …

Never ONCE told me “It was my coding portfolio that got me the job!”

In fact, when I looked back at my students’ coding portfolios that got big job offers at companies like Chase and Amazon…

They barely existed. Crickets. Almost nothing there.

We’re talking about students with no prior job experience in tech, getting entry level dev job offers at major companies.

So if they didn’t have a coding portfolio worth speaking about, how did they get those offers?

All of these successful students did this ONE THING in common.

They had experience working on a team, deploying into production on live client systems.

Here's what happened.

Danielle had graduated another bootcamp before I met her. Despite applying to dev jobs for months & sharing her coding portfolio everywhere, she wasn’t getting any interviews.

But I knew after seeing this over and over again that what Danielle really needed was experience deploying in production, and invited her to join the Joy of Coding Academy.

She decided to accept my offer of a guaranteed internship and joined us inside the Joy of Coding Academy so that she could learn to think like a coder & get hands-on experience deploying into production.

As soon as she got on the internship, she updated her resume & linked in profile. It was like magic - recruiters were coming out of the wood work to help her find interviews.

Eventually she accepted a tech position at a company practically in her backyard, making $20K more than she ever had before.

And that’s just the beginning.

Moral of the story?

Don’t blindly follow advice & get stuck taking actions that don’t help you move forward.

Instead, focus on learning to think like a coder & getting hands-on experience so you can get your next dev job offer.

Here’s to your success in 2025 🚀
